The Spanish Webmetrics classification of universities issued a report in the second half of 2018 on Yemeni universities. The report showed negative results, the most important of which was the lag of some Yemeni universities on a global level after a full year had passed.
The report showed that the University of Science and Technology held the first place out of 47 Yemeni universities, and in return it declined at the Arab and international levels. It fell in the Arab world from 119 to 156 out of 988 Arab higher education institutions, and globally from 3784 to 4380 out of more than 28 thousand. university.
As for research, Webmetrics did not include any Yemeni universities in its list.
A member of the Hadhramaut University Council, Dr. Hadoun bin Ali Al-Attas during her press interview Acapres He pointed out that international academic classification bodies are misleading indicators in terms of measurement and evaluation due to unfairness, indicating that by saying: We have highly qualified faculty members, but the financial aspect prevented them from participating.
Webmetrics is a global classification of universities, issued by the Spanish Center for the Evaluation of Universities and Institutes (CSIC), affiliated with the Spanish Ministry of Education. It was launched in February 2004.
As for CSIC, it was founded in 1939 from a previous body that had been established in 1907 under the leadership of Professor Ramon y Cajal.
This classification is based in all its criteria on the electronic side, as its team does not go out on the ground.
The classification criteria for a university website include four aspects: its size and the files it contains - reference to research in Google Scholar - general impact through other links that lead to the university website.
Webmetrics is considered one of the lowest global rankings in evaluation, as it is surpassed by the Chinese Shanghai classification, followed by the British Times and QS, all the way to the American US-NEWS.
Yemeni universities have gradually dropped out of all the limited international academic classifications, as the British QS organization considered the research outputs of Yemeni universities to be weak.
As for the American US-NEWS, the majority of Yemeni universities graduated from it by 2016, except for Sana’a University, which ranked 111 out of 124 Arab universities in 19 Arab countries, where the classification is based on 13 indicators to measure its performance and reputation in the field of academic research.
As for Shanghai and the Times, Yemeni universities have not been included in it yet, given that the Times classification includes only 1,000 universities, while Shanghai only has 500 universities.
