Activating self-skills to address university study problems

Researcher Hassan Muhammad Al-Baiti presented a research paper at the Seventh Scientific Conference of Taibah University in 2016 entitled “Activating self-skills to address university study problems.”

His study was supervised by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud Abdel Hafez, and this study aimed to identify ways to activate the “psychological and mental” self-skills. To address the problems of university study, represented by three axes: specialization, English language by specialization, and academic achievement.

The problem of the study lies in the absence of means to achieve self-development for the student in all activities at the university. The student's academic achievement is also low due to his weak learning with the traditional education of the university lecturer. It also lies in the difficulty of the university student adapting cognitively to the English language in his specialization, as well as psychological difficulty in accepting its study.

The study sample consisted of (80) students, in (12) specialized tracks and (3) general tracks. The researcher prepared a questionnaire consisting of (18) items within the three axes of the research, which is based on the descriptive and analytical approach. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed. The results of the study revealed that there is a close relationship between those who practice self-skills in their specializations and the strength of their goals. Their psychological and cognitive difficulties are not radical, they are enthusiastic in their studies, and their grades fall between (B+: A+).

As for those who rely on traditional methods in their university studies, their goals are not long-term, and they tend to focus; For the sake of memorizing the course only, and what indicates this is that one of the most cognitive difficulties they have is the density of the curriculum, as they see it, which leads to depression when studying the curriculum, and their grades fall between (C: B).

The study's recommendations were that the student should benefit from the experiences around him in activating his personal skills to overcome difficulties, with qualification from the university lecturer, and that the university should address the issue of developing students' personal skills in curricula designed for that.
